about

Playing solo shows has never really been my thing. It's difficult for me to recreate what I've done on record into a live show with out a band. So aside from drunkenly playing songs during a party on acoustic guitar or song sharing with a friend on a day off, Matilda and live shows don't usually mix.

Out of all the albums and music I have created over the years, I've only officially played two live shows as "Matilda." I decided to do this show because it was a showcase of solo artists, and most of the people on the bill were close friends of mine.

The showcase included, Brandon Mylenek, Joshua Costa, Laura Shortt, A man named Garland [last name forgotten] Matilda, and Tommy Kelly.

You may notice that of the 17 tracks there are eight Matilda songs, one joke song, one sound check and a lot of tuning and talking. This is part of the reason I don't like to play live. I use a lot of alternate tunings and luckily there were plenty of guitars for me to tune that night, but even then, I would have to switch guitars, and try and talk with the audience while I re-set up so that people were not just sitting there watching me tune, or plug shit in. Another thing that stalls the songs is, in an attempt to fill out the songs, I had asked to borrow a delay pedal to try mock a loop pedal. Making little 2 second blips and buzzes to mimic drum tracks or second guitar lines was sometimes helpful and sometimes hurt the track.

Needless to say, this is a rare way to experience Matilda. Very exposed, and honest, and often bad.

I cut the album so that if one desires, they can simply skip the "tuning and talking" tracks and just hear the songs played [poorly] in a live setting. But, being forced to talk with the audience during these breaks, a lot of history and tid-bits about the songs come up, and one may find that interesting (this is assuming that you are interested in "Matilda" in the first place, which, in it of itself is a pending mental transaction).

On this live recording:

Shaun Wisniewski plays multiple guitars out of tune and sings out of key. He wrote most of the stuff you hear on this album but can not be held responsible for anything he said during the recording.

Ryan Ball made all of the recording possible, provided a PA, mics and stands, and mixed all the levels during the show.

Thanks to everyone who showed up that night, and special thanks to Laura Shortt who not only played that evening but let us use her basement for playing in.

about

Shaun W. Detroit

Shaun W. (fka Matilda) is meant to be more of a musical documentation of life events rather than a marketable musical cash cow.

It is the mostly solo, ever changing, ongoing musical project of Shaun Wisniewski.
Songs are mostly folk-y and noisy. They also have flourishes of electronic beats, sound collage, and synth. For the most part the songs are poorly produced, and that’s fine.
